AIR-POLLUTION SURVEY
Five-Year Project Nearing End
A five-year survey of airpollution in Christchurch will end early next year. For many months experts of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research have been analysing atmospheric conditions over built-up areas. Twenty-four recording stations have been established measuring, among other things, the concentration of carbon dioxide in the air. deposits of coarse material from the atmosphere, the amount of smoke in the air, and the velocity of winds in different quarters.
Every six months findings are reported to the Air Pollution Advisory Committee which was appointed in Christchurch in February, 1959. It consists of representatives of interested Government agencies, such as the Meteorological Service and the D.5.1.R., and the City Council and the Christchurch Drainage Board.
As weather affects atmospheric content, an accurate analysis is not possible except over a period of years, when an average can be established on seasonal climatic factors. For this reason information on findings may not be available until the survey is completed.
