U.K. IN E.E.C. BAD FOR N.Z.
Dairy Leader's Opinion
“The Press” Special Service WELLINGTON. June 12.
The chairman of the Dominion dairy section of Federated Farmers (Mr R. Woolerton) told the annual conference of the section today that the industry would almost certainly be worse off if the United Kingdom had been permitted to enter the European Common Market. “You will all remember what nonsense we were tbld, such as that the E.E.C. was ‘outward looking,’ and that ultimately not less, but much greater, quantities of our produce could be sold in the enlarged community," he said. "This was quite false and one needs only to have an ounce of intelligence to perceive that the E.E.C. agricultural policy was going to be even less liberal than the present highly protectionist policies of the Six. “We were fooling ourselves if we thought the situation for our dairy industry was going to improve if the United Kingdom joined the E.E.C.,” said Mr Woolerton. “It meant the United King- 1
dom giving France our position in the British market. Was that going to be good for us? Of course not."
