Bibliography To Be Prepared

The University of Canterbury is to prepare a comprehensive bibliography on New Zealand's sub-Antarctic islands in order to determine

what practical research remains to be done on them. Dr. B. Stonehouse, of the university’s aoology department last evening told a meeting of the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Geographical Society that such a bibliography would greatly assist the planning of expeditions to the islands. Initially, the zoology department was taking the lead in the compilation of the bibliography because it had many interests down there;

but other departments at the university were interested in the project, he said. Already, said Dr. Stonehouse. much research had been carried out in the subAntarctic islands. The bibliography was intended to cover as many aspects of research as possible to discover just how much was known and which areas suffered from neglect. Once all this was known, the university could then make an intelligent move for a series of expeditions to clear up much of what was not known, he said. The first of these expeditions might be made next year. The islands were the Snares Islands, Campbell Island .the Auckland Islands, the Antipode Island, and the Bounty Islands, Dr. Stonehouse said. The university had established a research in the Snares Islands in 1961: and although it was not a Canterbury University project, representatives went last year on an expedition

to the Auckland Islands. Dr. Stonehouse said the Australians had taken their responsibilities on Macquarie Island very seriously indeed. "We are a long way behind. Not that we intend entering in any competition, but we certainly have a lot to catch up with,” he said.
