Lodge Members 106 Years
Between them, Mr and Mrs C. D. Rowland, of Trafalgar street. St. Albans, can jointly claim more than 100 years of membership of the Independent Order of Oddfellows. “I have been a sister of the Naomi Rebecca Lodge for 51 years, and my husband has been a brother of the Washington Lodge for 55 years.” said Mrs Rowland yesterday. She is the oldest active member of her lodge of which she is a subordinate officer.
Both Mr and Mrs Rowland have received their 50 years' veteran’s jewels, and as fa: as Mrs Rowland knows they are the only husband and wife in Christchurch to have achieved this.
With the institution and growth of Social Security, membership of benefit lodges had decreased slightly, said Mrs Rowland. Their value today was mainly fraternal, she said, though some benefits were still paid. Though ill-health has made it impossible for Mr Rowland to attend the lodge for the last two years, Mrs Rowland is still an active member and attends regularly.
