GOLF Title-Holder Beaten Twice In Women’s Tournament

The Russel! Grace Trophy for women’s interprovincial golf will almost certainly change hands this week. The title-holder, South Canterbury, was surprisingly beaten in its first two matches when the tournament began in a bitterly cojd wind and heavy ground conditions at New Plymouth today. In the morning, South Canterbury lost, 4-2. against Taranaki, and was beaten by the same margin by Waikato-King Country in the second round.

Canterbury made a good start by beating Otago, 5-1, m the first round, and had the bye in the afternoon. The Canterbury championship runner-up, Miss B. A. Stafford, of Timaru, played splendid golf to gain one of South Canterbury’s two victories in the morning, but was later beaten, 3 and 1, by the New Zealand title-holder, Miss P. Harrison, of WaikatoKing Country. South Canterbury’s most successful player was Miss M. M. Kennard, who won both her games in the No. 2 position.

Canterbury’s only loss was sustained by Miss J JiCurrie, who went down by 3 and 2 against Mrs J. Gilkenson, of Otago. Miss L. Hillis scored the team’s biggest win, 8 and 6. against Mrs R. P. Lattimer, while Miss S. Grigg, the Canterbury champion, and Mrs A. I. Charles also won easily. •The New Zealand representatives, Mrs J. -Mangan (Palmerston North) and Miss

N. White (Auckland) had a real battle in their match, Miss White winning 2 and 1. She had three birdies during the first five holes and was three up at the turn. Miss White lost some of her accuracy and Mrs Mangan made it all square, but Miss White pulled her game together, and finally took the match wjth skilful play.
