WAIMAIRI POLL

Hotel Union Objects

The Canterbury Hotel. Hospital, and Restaurant Workers’ Union considered that certain actions of the Waimairi County Council were a blatant-distortion, of cotndemocratic principles, said the union's secretary (Mr L. N. Short) yesterday. He was criticising the council for adopting “completely new rules" under which it will hold a referendum on fluoridation.

Mr Short said that if 59 per cent, of voters exercised their right to vote, and 99 per cent, of these voters voted against fluoridation, the council would still fluoridate the county’s water. “To make matters worse, apparently nearly 20 per cent of the electorate are not on high pressure," he said, “and consequently they are less likely to take the trouble to vote." •

The union's executive, he said, would ask the Canterbury district council of the Federation of Labour to discuss the matter. The union was not concerned with the issue of fluoridation. It was concerned only with the manner in which the council intended to hold the referendum.
