Cable ships yesterday began Laying operations on the first transatlantic telephone cable directly linking the United States and England, a 3500-miles system which will stretch from Tuckerton, New Jersey, to Widemouth. Cornwall. The 47-million-doJLa'rs system is scheduled to begin service later this year. It is a joint undertaking of the long lines department of the American Telephone and Telegraph Company and the British Post Office. Officials of the American flrm said torpedo-shaped amplifiers will be spliced into the cable at 20-mile intervals to boost voice currents. The amplifiers are designed to last 20 years without repair work. The cable will be able to handle 128 simultaneous conversations.
