NEW YORK. June 11. Jack Root, aged 87. the first light heavy-weight boxing champion, died in hospital of a heart attack on Sunday. United Press International reported In the first light heavy-weight title bout ever held, on April 22. 1903. Root won a 10-round decision over Kid McCoy, of Detroit. but lost the title in his next fight.
