LOTTERY FOR HOSPITALS

‘No Help To Cut Taxation’ (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. June 11. The Minister of Internal Affairs. Sir Leon Gotz. said tonight that it would not help to reduce taxation “a penny” if all the profits of the Golden Kiwi lottery were given to hospitals. “It would not help anyone,” he replied in answer to a questioner at a National Party panel at Papatoetoe.

When the distribution committees w’ere set up, some good research project might be suggested which could be supported, he said. “We could spend £500,000 on some medical research problem,” he said. “But we have to make sure that research workers have a guaranteed income for a number of years so that they can get to work, recruit staff, get equipment.

“We have several proposals before various scientific and medical councils which are at present being considered. We have to make sure we are not duplicating work done elsewhere. “There is a certain amount of impatience toward us to get money spent, but we have to make sure that we get a proper project on a long-term basis before we support it.”

Mairehau Residents’ Association

The many problems which were before the association when it was formed several years ago were nearly all solved, tihe secretary of the Mairehau Residents’ Association (Mr M. G. Hall) told the annual meeting recently. Until the northern outlet was decided it would be unreasonable to complain about the development of the area, said the president (Mr F. H. Simpson). Some work to roads and footpaths was still required. A children’s library built by the association was functioning efficiently, and an adults’ library was now proposed. Mr Simpson prophesied that the association would lapse through lack of support. There were eight members at the meeting, compared with 26 last year.
