RACING William David Does A Sound Trial For Oamaru

William David paid £5O 18s when he won the Oamaru Winter Cup last year, but he will not be at such long odds in that race on Saturday. He has encouraging race form and showed his present fitness with one of the best trials on the No. 7 grass at Riccarton yesterday.

William David appeared to have a definite edge on Ashleigh near the end of a mile, run in Imin 48sec on soft ground. It was a good gallop on a small track; few trialists could make good time around the turns; but William David appeared to be more at ease in the conditions than he has been in some of his races.

The stable apprentice. A I Swanson rode William David and Ashleigh had his race rider. A H Eastwood up They ran the final three furlongs in 41 4-ssec William David would be best served by a firm track and a strong pace all the wav in the Oamaru Winter Cup He won the Marlborough Cup in fast time a few weeks ago and held his form with minor placing! later Ashleigh beat William Davio twice on later days of the Marlborough meeting and then ran sixth at Ashburton He has had a fairly busy season but seems to have thrived on racing, and on his best form he would have ar. undeniable chance at Oamaru Form Runner Royal Leigh, another form runner for Riccarton tn the Oamaru Winter Cup. yesterday sprinted six furlongs in Imin 24 l-ssec in the hands of the stable apprentice. A Reriti N East wood will ride him on Saturday This combinatioi nearly carried off the big race at Ashburton last month but it would have been all to no avail Eastwood had been weighed out without a lead bag and Royal Leigh lost second place after running Persuasive very close. Even though he did not carry his correct weight Royal Leigh showed ability in leading for 11 furlongs, all but two or three strides, and he may be hard to peg back at Oamaru. which has been a good course for front-run-ners Waverley was probably the most impressive over six furlorgs. Ridden by W Traecey he was going keenly and shading Lady York <A. H Eastwood) near the end of a strong run They recorded Imin 20sec and 39 l-ssec for the last Jiree furlongs Waverley should be ready for a peak run m the Grange Handicap at Oamaru. Beck will nde Paua tn the G-ange Handicap at Oamaru This Sabaean mare has had a lean natch since she beat

some good sprinters at Washdyke last December Clipper (Swanson) was working nicely ahead of Navarone (Collins) finishing six furlongs in Imin 22sec, the first three in 39 2-ssec. Clipper showed fair form at times in the North Island, and may become a useful winner for J L. Barr’s stable He is in the Farewell Handicap at Oamaru Apache (N. Eastwood) was not put to the test while running six furlongs in Imin 24 3-ssec, the last three in 41 l-ssec If he gets good footing. Sal’s Pride (Hadfield), Race Guide (Cowles), and Melody Maid were matched over a mile and ran the last three furlongs tn 42 l-ssec. Hadfield will ride Sal’s Pride in the distance hack race at Oamaru. Sprint Chance Picca Leigh (Messent) a Grange Handicap lightweight, sprinted half a mile in 53 2-ssec. the final three furlongs in 38 2-ssec. Idol Prince (Swanson) and His Host (Collins) were clear of Araphoe (Mrs Clutterbuck) finishing half a mile in 55 3-ssec They quickened for the last three furlongs, run in 40 2-ssec Happy Venture (Beck) and Valuate (N Eastwood) recorded 39 3-ssec for three furlongs. a start, but finished second close behind Magenza. Golden Howe dropped right out in the straight They ran the last six furlongs in Imin 24 2-ssec

Dotterel (Williams) was better than Sports Date (T. Wilson) in a run over eight fences on the trial steeplechase course. Dotterel gained an early lead the first time over the double, and two quick leaps there the next time round gave him a margin of at least two lengths at the end John Mac (E. Skelton) started with them, but found the pace too solid and dropped away behind about half way through the school. Sports Date was not disgraced in failing to match the competent Dotterel for jumping ability, and might make a show as a light-weight in the steeplechase at Oamaru
