(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright)

BRISBANE, June 10

Campo, which is raced by members of the Punters’ Club of Melbourne, won the £20,500 Centenary Brisbane Cup at 33/1. The New Zealand-bred River Seine <9/11 finished third to be the only one of five New Zealand-bred horses in the field of 14 to make any show. Conference finished fifth, Burgos eighth, Oakland ninth, and Kamikaze, thirteenth. The Sydney horse. Piper’s Son (20/1) was second. Campo races in the nomination of Messrs A. J. G. Sinclair, R. R. Maynard, and M. I. Turley, who have leased him from the owners. Campo’s time was 3:22 4-5, more than three seconds outside the race record established in 1938 by the Queensland horse Spear Chief, at 3:19%. The most excited man- an the track was the Punters’ Club secretary, Mr Vic Laxon, of Melbourne. It was at his insistence that the horse came to Brisbane after Campo had run well on a heavy track at Moonee Valley. Foretold Result

So confident was Laxon fit that stage—a month ago—that he contacted the Queensland jockey Peter Gumbleton, convinced him the horse could win and almost foretold the way the race would be run. “You’ll be in front turning for home,” he said, “and with your weight of 7-5 they’ll have the job to run you down.”

Visiting horses dominated the finish. Campo and River Seine (9-1) came from Victoria and Piper’s Son (20/1) from Sydney. The official fourth," Sometime, originally came from South Australia.

Campo took the lead for about a furlong in the early stages, but then Gumbleton settled him down behind the leader, Raajpoot, from the 12 furlongs to the three. With a furlong to go.

Piper’s Son looked as if he would wear Campo down, but Gumbleton got a little extra out of Campo and he kicked on in the last half furlong.

Even Race River Seine ran a good even race and was beautifully ridden by Jack Purtell. but he petered out over the final furlong. Maidenhead, which started favourite at 5/4, ran a shocking race. She was still covering ground wide at the home turn and beat only two home. The New Zealand horse Conference, ninth at the halfmile, had moved into sixth place at the home turn. He made a dash approaching the furlong but finished fifth. Kamikaze beat only one horse home. He could not go the early speed. Oakland was ninth. Another New Zealand-bred horse, Burgos, was never going particularly well and plodded home to finish eighth. Raajpoot was list.
