Emile Griffith, of America, won the world welter-weight boxing championship for an unprecedented third time last night, but the split points decision was hotly disputed by the loser, Luis Rodriguez. of Cuba Griffith gained an early lead with sharp punching but Rodriguez. a Cuban refugee who won the title from Griffith two months and a half ago. finished strongly with a powerful body The referee gave Griffith the fight by nine rounds to six, and a judge scored it 8-7 tn his favour. A second judge gave the fight to Rodriquez by 10 rounds to five. Griffith is the first man to win the welter-weight title more than twice.
