ROSEBOWL TOURNEY

Manager’s Report

The performance of the Canterbury golf team in the Freyberg Rosebowl tournament was not quite as bad as the final result showed, said Mr J. P. O'Gorman, manager of the team, in a report to the Canterbury Provincial! Golf Assoc ation last evening. ■’Alan Browne. our number six, was the first player in the tournament to tee off He topped the ball and after (hat we never seemed to be out of trouble.” said Mr O'Gorman. "We had our share of bad luck, and most of the matches we lost were because of one bad stroke. But the main reason for the disappointing results was the loss of form by the middle men in the team."

Mr O’Gorman said he would prefer to discuss the Hutt Park club course, where the tournament was played, in committee, but he did mention that the course was a big hitter's paradise and did not penalise players who hooked. He recommended that next year the Canterbury team should be chosen at least two weeks before the tournament and that the players should have some match practice together as a team, and if necessary, coaching. The standard of golf in the tournament was higher than previously: there were still weak teams, but they gave far harder competition to the stronger teams, he added.

The meeting decided to nominate Mr C. M. Turner for the position of manager of the New Zealand team to play in the Commonwealth tournament at Melbourne next November.
