Athletics DEFENCE OF N.Z. TITLE
Snell’s Tour In U.S. Ends
(Special Crspdt N.Z-P.A.) LOS ANGELES. June 9
After the second and third fastest miles of his career, but unable to surpass his world record, P G. Snell will return on Saturday from the United States with the intention of braining to retain his New Zealand cross-country title. This is the only target he has set himself for the rest of the year.
On Friday night in the Compton relays, he recorded 3m in 55sec in heading the fastest overall mile field in history. Snell said today he found his most recent run one of his hardest races. “Only the mile against John Davies in the Dunedin Royal meeting was harder,” he said. “I think I was at my peak for the Modesto mile, both physically and psychologically.” said Snell.
“I had taken it rather easy in the two weeks since then and did little more than jog around.
“The way this last race was run, it would obviously have been the one to provide a world record, but I just wasn’t able to kick home really strongly,” he added.
