Cut In Sales Tax Urged
The abolition of sales tax on commercial goods vehicles, their tyres, and spare parts would reduce transport charges by 2% per cent., probably increasing to 5 per cent., the Christchurch Road Transport Alliance was told at a recent meeting. A resolution was passed calling on the Government to abolish the tax, and pointing out that a tax of 33 1-3 per cent, could add £lOOO to the price of a truck and £lO to the cost of a tyre. A similar resolution was passed recently by the Christchurch Suburban Carriers’ and Customhouse Agents’ Association. The tax reduction would benefit ancillary users such as farmers and tradesmen, the meeting was told. Buzzing Baggage Passengers scattered and police moved in at London Airport last night when a pile of luggage began to buzz. A baggage loader, remembering an incident at the airport last Thursday when a Portugal-bound piece of luggage exploded, called the police. Gingerly examining the luggage, a police officer discovered in one of toe cases an alarm clock. — London. June 10.
