Criticism Of Site Of New College
Dssatisf action with the public announcement of pians for then new Christchurch Technical College was expressed at a meeting of the college's buard of managers last night. The principal, Mr D W. Lyall, re norted that no informa- • on about the proposed Ensors road college had beeen received, after the announcement of a £300.000 project on May 31 by the Minister ( f Education 'Mr Tenn ent' Members of the board questioned the finality of the Ensors road playing fields as the site for the new day school. Mr F. H. Dephoff asked whether consideration should be given to the use of a site reserved for an intermed;a e school opposite the Heathcote river, off Ensors road. •f think we are entitled to object that this is made public without the board berg approached first,” he said. The chairman of the board, Mr R Jones, said that confirmation of the announcement should be sought from the Department of Bducat.on before any further discussion took place. If we start off by feeling sore about what is known in election year as propaganda. we will do no good,” he said.
When the department’s ideas were known, an approach might be made to
-he Canterbury Education Board to find out its views on the use of the other Ensors road site, he said. The board decided to ask for an early confirmation of the Minister’s statement and to hold a special meeting, if necessary, to discuss it.
Mr Lyall said that the board should not lose sight of its original recommendation to the Education Department that larger extensions should be made to the present college site. If the proposed day school was completed and ready for occupation in a week it would still not solve the problem of accommodation for evening classes at the college, he said.
