THREATENED STRIKE

Engineers Of TEAL.

(NZ. Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 10,

Hasty conciliation talks this morning averted a threatened strike at midnight tonight of Tasman Empire Airways, Ltd., engineering staff at Auckland. The argument between the men—all members of the Auckland branch of the New Zealand Engineering Union—and the management is over the transfer of a shop steward from Whenuapai to Mechanics Bay.

A secret ballot on whether to strike was taken late last week among the men at Whenuapai. Only two of the 91 men in the maintenance workshops voted against direct action.

The Whenuapai workshops men got unanimous support for their action from the 300 engineering workshop men employed by T.E.A.L. at its Mechanics Bay depot. At the week-end, the Auckland Conciliation Commissioner (Mr L. Hunter) was asked to help in solving the dispute. He called a meeting of the parties this morning. It was agreed to suspend any direct action tonight and another meeting of the parties will be held on Thursday.
