Communism
Sir, —This morning’s issue contained yet another letter from “P.J.A.” on his favourite theme—communism. His many letters to your newspaper all indicate his complete agreement with the Chinese Communist doctrine. Why does he not go there—and stay? “P.J.A.” said that in 50 years universal communism will be in force. If we have too many people of bis views and philosophy, then he might be correct However, with sufficient loyal people on hand I consider that this scourge need not take over this country.— Yours, etc., G.B.W. June 5, 1963.
Sir, —“P.J.A.” has tried to ignite so many damp squibs that out of compassion I must help him to keep this one adighit. Much nonsense is talked about communism, not only in dreary and unconvincing propaganda for it. but also by dear old ladies (of both sexes) whose political enthusiasm makes them search for reds under every bed. Political systems, like the human race, are perpetually evolving. The socialist of 50 years ago, preaching about the rights and brotherhood of man, would dearly recognise the paternal topheavy bureaucrat that he has become. Nor would crusted Tories, who at an earlier date bitterly opposed Home Rule for Ireland, be persuaded to believe that a Conservative Prime Minister would have any part ip backing a black colonial administration against a white one. Some kind of communism may be accepted in New Zealand 50 years hence, but it will certainly not be the type envisaged by ''P.J.A.” — Yours, etc..
