Marine Parade
Sir, —Would Mr Scoular tell us how the survey of the traffic on the Causway was conducted and by whom? He states that the width was found to be adequate except for a limited number of Sundays. This is not true to facts, as.. I have seen many accidents and near-misses caused by insufficient width of road. —Yours, etc., S. W HICKMOTT.
[The City Engineer (Mr P. G. Scoular) said: "The survey of traffic volumes and capacity on the Causeway was carried opt under the direction of the council's traffic engineer in early 1962 Both week-day and week-end machine counts, supplemented by peak-hour manual counts, were used. As mentioned previously, the counci) has under consideration the question of construction of cycle tracks. The reported accident rate on the Causeway is very low —four in five years.*’)
