N.Z. "PLAYS GAME”

U.K. Butter Shortage

(N.Z. Press Assn.— Copyright) LONDON, June 8

New Zealand was not taking advantage of her position as a butter exporter in the current European butter shortage, the “Daily Express” said in an editorial commenting on the increasing scarcity of butter —a result of the severe northern winter.

“In previous shortages, supplies have often held us to ransom, demanding fantastic prices,” the "Daily Express” commented.

“The New Zealanders take no advantage of the situation. They maintain supplies regularly and at a reasonable price. Britain is fortunate to have such friends," the paper added.

A news report elsewhere in the “Daily Express” quoted a, London wholesaler as saying that although they knew there was going to be a shortage, New Zealand shippers and dairymen were determined to keep prices at a realistic level. Mr Donald Barker, manager of a butter-importing firm, said: “New Zealand has played the game during this shortage.”
