Troops Fire On Teheran Rioters
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) TEHERAN, June 8. Angry crowds clashed with armed troops in Teheran today and panicky shop owners rang down their iron shutters.
Unofficial reports said several people were killed. week, in violent antiGovernment rioting, troops fired on street mobs. Martial law was imposed in Teheran and Shiraz, Southern Iran, after the riots, in which 86 people died and 150 were injured. The demonstrations were
• said to be the work of religious elements opposed to ■ certain reforms, including i emancipation of women from the veil. I They are also said to oppose , land reforms being intro- , duced by the Shah. I Today tanks and troops fired into the air when sporadic demonstrations broke out.
