Bounty Descendants

Two descendants of the Bounty mutineers were among the officers in the Wanganella when she was in Auckland at the week-end. They are Mr C. Buffet, third mate, and Mr L. Wilson, fourth mate. Mr Buffet is a descendant of Midshipman John Young, of the Bounty. Mr Wilson is from Lord Howe Island.—(P.A.) Council At Service The Mayor of Lyttelton (Mr J. B. Collett) and members of the Lyttelton Borough Council and. their wives attended evensong at the Holy Trinity Church at Lyttelton last evening to mark the church’s one hundred and thirteenth patronal festival. Canon A. C. Purchase of Christchurch, who was attached to the church from 1928 to 1932, preached the sermon. The first lesson was read by the Mayor, and the Deputy Mayor (Cr. R. H. Duff) read the second lesson. Members of the congregation attended a social in the Canterbury Kilwinning Hall after the service.

Road Cleared • A- bulldozer and a grader were used to clear the Hermi-tage-Ball Hut road of snow yesterday afternoon. A bus with chains then took a party of seven men who had been isolated at the Bal! Hut since Thursday to the Hermitage. Heavy snowfalls had blocked the road to a depth of 18 inches. The manager of the Hermitage (Mr L. S. Dennis) said the heavy plant found “it hard going.” Aramoana’s Berth It is not expected the difficulties experienced in berthing the rail-road ferry Aramoana at Picton last Christmas will arise again. Both sides of the wharf into which the 368 ft 4300-ton vessel fit have been lengthened, and at the ends of the wharves thus formed heavy dolphins have been built. In a high wind the vessel, with a beam of 59ft, can, if necessary, swing on these dolphins as she loses steerage way, and slide easily into her berth. Both the dolphins and the high sides of the berth are protected with heavy rubber buffers. Ski-ing At Coronet Skiers were • active at Coronet Peak at the weekend but weather and snow conditions were far from ideal. There were about 100 oi, the slopes on Saturday and the main tow was running. The snow was not in very good condition and showed signs of melting. Yesterday a heavy mist spoilt the hay and at one stage the tow was stopped. The first mishap of the season occurred n the afternoon when Peter Cook, of Miramar, fell and broke his leg.—(P.A.) Popular Camp The Marlborough Automobile Association’s motor camp at Grove road, Blenheim, is already booked out tor next Christmas. The camp has six cabins and five caravans in addition to a large amount of space for tents and caravans. A recently-built £9OOO ablutions b ock was in use last Christmas.
