Desert Chief’s future in racing will probably be settled in the next two or three days. Mr J. F. Tuitton, of Riccarton, cabled an American owner after buying Desert Chief for 2800gns at the Barton dispersal sale on Saturday and expects a reply by tomorrow or Wednesday. “If they don’t want him in America, he might be hard to place here from his present

plaqe in the weights,” Mr Tuitton said last evening. Desert Chief, which was brought north from Wingatui yesterday, will be nominated for the Ashburton meeting and main flat races at Trentfham next month.

Desert Chief was nominated lest week for the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups and Mr Tuitton feels pretty certain the horse will do his spring racing in Australia if he is not resold to the United States.

Last winter Mr Tutton bought Phoenician and sold him to the Californian owner, Mr V, Graber, who also owns Cadiz.

Phoenician won at Hollywood Park last month.

Marlow and Cumberland, which were -bought by the Christchurch owner, Mr N. A. Syme, at the Barton sale, will be trained at Riccarton by N. T. Cowles.

Two Jumpers Destroyed

Two successful Wingatuitrained jumpers were destroyed on their home course on Saturday. They were Cashmere, which fractured a sesamoid bone in the Otago Hurdles, and Lucky ■ Bill, which broke down badly in the Dunedin Steeplechase Cashmere was a 10-year-old Cassock-Merry Vale gelding owned and trained by Mr C H. Wallis.

One of his major wins as a hurdler was in the Sydenham Hurdles at the 1961 Grand National meeting He was also a competent galloper on winter tracks and won an August Handicap at Riccarton

Lucky Bill won in open company on the flat before making the grade as a hurdler and steeplechaser. He won the 1962 Otago Steeplechase for his ownertrainer, Mr D. F. O.’ConneU

The nine-yea-old New Zealand horse, owned by foe Vicgrey Farm of Oakland California, closed ground m the finishing portion of the six furlong dash to capture third, finishing about two lengths behind Flying Dutchman. The jockey J. Leonard rode Phoenician 11, which was second favourite.
