Wins By Darfield And United Darfield and United were the winning teams in the Malvern Rugby sub-union's senior competition on Saturday. United beat Black Diamonds, 15-3. and Darfield beat Kirwee, 22-3. Black Diamonds were without some of their regular players. and were decisively beaten by United. Facing the sun in the first half. United was soon attacking strongly well inside Black Diamonds territory, and by half-time led 12-0. In the second spell Black Diamonds presented a stiffer front, and B. Smith opened the team’s score with a penalty goal. But United was superior in all-round play, and the Black Diamonds defence was strongly tested during the remainder of the game. R. Green, O. Stuart, and L. Barr in the forwards, and B Smith and G. Wilson in the backs played well for Black Diamonds. The referee w-as Mr J. Holliday. Darfield v. Kirwee At Darfield, the home side won 22-3, after leading by 6 points to 3 at half-time. Kirwee's forwards were lively and vigorous, and often came close to scoring from short-passing rushes, but Darfield's defence held. Kirwee was eventually subdued by the steadier Darfield pack, ably led by A. Hopkinson.
Darfield’s backs received a fair share of the ball, and G. Rigden. H. Mitchell, and R Churton made good use of it. Kirwee's backs seldom looked likely to penetrate. Both full-backs were sound and gained much ground with long, accurate line-kicking. J. Hotop (Darfield) was outstanding in this respect. For Darfield. tries were scored by Hopkinson (2). C. Adams, M. Redfern, and B. Mitchell. Hopkinson and Hotop each converted one. and Hopkinson kicked a penalty goal. G Judd scored a try for Kirwee. Mr G. Wright was the referee.
