RECRUITING TROUBLES
Blame On Fathers (N.Z. Press Association) TAURANGA, June 9. Returned soldier fathers of youths interested in becoming Regular Force cadets often discouraged their sons because of unhappy mem ories they had of their own term in uniform, Major D. A. Phillips, recruiting officer for the Northern Military District. said yesterday. Major Phillips was visiting Tauranga to interview prospective recruits for Malaya and for the New Zealand Army Regular Force cadets. “They recall, for instance, arriving at camps in the pouring rain, stuffing palliases with damp straw for mattesses and poor quality food which often suffered further in the cooking. ‘That is one of the things we are up against in recruiting Regular Force cadets. "These prejudices exist in the minds of the fathers and not knowing the conditions under which cadets live and work, they discourage their boys’ ambitions,” Major I Phillips said.
