E Didham, saddled the winners of the on-course double at Wingatui on Saturday, and his son, E J Didham, rode both horses—Golden Century (Electric Stakes) and Highland Fair (Tainui Improvers' Handicap). The combination paid £4l Is M for £1 A two-year-old colt by Cassock from Dollar Girl, Golden Century was having his second race for his Central Otago breeder, Mr J H Gqprge Highland Fair recorded his first success since winning a maiden race at Gore in the spring On that occasion he won most impressively, but in subsequent racing he had been disappointing. Golden Century was bracketed with the Riccarton candidate, Flashest, in the first leg. and Highland Fair was bracketed with Lucky Streak (ridden by R. J. Skelton), otherwise the dividends would have been much greater. Golden Century made a smart beginning from one of the outside stalls and was soon in front He was never headed and drew away over the final stages to win by five lengths Great Howe led the chase home a length and a half clear of Soutaine, with five lengths to Now or Never and three lengths to the favourite. Maguire’s Peter. Then came Entrance. Zelona, Flashest and Mortise Highland Fair ran to the front two and a half furlongs from home in the .Tainui Improvers and was not headed Dawsac. which was last away, made a gallant effort for second place a length clear of First Mink, with a long neck to Bustup and three parts of a length to Silver Spire.
