RACING Donna Maria Wins First Leg Of Wingatui Double

“The Press” Special Service DUNEDIN, June 9.

The Riccarton-trained, Dunedin-owned Donna Maria justified her favouritism in the Queen Elizabeth Handicap, the feature race and the first leg of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s double at Wingatui, on Saturday. But she had only half a neck to spare from die fast-finishing Melotone, one of the outsiders of the field.

The double was rounded off by Bold Venture in* the Empire Handicap, and the combination paid £l4 14s for £l.

Trained by J. L. Barr for Mr R. A. Joseph, Donna Maria was ridden by W. D. Skelton. On the second day of the meeting she was a disappointing tenth. Melotone, which is raced by Mr M. A. McKenzie, was having his first start from the Wingatui stable of H. A. and H. T. Anderton. The Kurdistan gelding was seventh favourite and was ridden by the stable apprentice, L. Tree.

In a total doubles pool of £27.214, including £3369 on-course, McGregor was the first leg favourite with 12.394 10s tickets. Donna '‘"'Mana carried 11,437$ tickets and Bold Venture carried the bulk of the second leg investments with 6111 5s tickets. Always Close Up Chattel was last when the field settled down in the Queen Elizabeth Handicap and Captain Morgan and Sudd El Nil were just in fnont of her.

McGregor jumped out smartly from Donna Maria. Believe Me soon joined McGregor and at the six furkmgs they led Donna Maria. Magic Casement and Sudd El Nil (in line) ahead of Melotone and Captain Morgan.

There was no change at the hall mile. Donna Mana followed the pacemakers into the straight and had charge from Melotone, Sudd El Nil and Chattel at the furlong Donna Maria held on by half a neck, with Melotone three lengths and a half clear of Sudd El Nil, half a length to Captain Morgan and half i neck to Chattel. Next were McGregor, Believe Me. Magic Casement, and Tombob. Second Leg Brandy Gold drifted soon after the start of the Empire Handicap. Tutton jumped out clear of Bold Venture and Gold View, with Duplex and Sir Athol next. Bold Venture joined Tutton »t the three furlongs and these two led into the straight. Gold View then came through on the Inside to take a narrow lead, but she was unable to finish off her effort.

Bold Venture ran on strongly to hold The Wanderer by a length and a half, with three parts of a length to Gold View and Tutton. which dead-heated for third place, half a length clear of Duplex. Sir Athol beat only Brandy Gold, last. Results:— ELECTRIC STAKES, £225; St. 9/5 GOLDEN CENTURY (24A) 8-0 E. J. Didham 1 2/2 GREAT HOWE (5) 8-7 R. J. Skelton 2 4/3 SOUTAINE (19) 8-7 B J.
