A Cautious Approach
A widely representative group of people interested in the future of potato processing in New Zealand which met in North Otago after the" opening of the Waitaki Farmers’ Freezing Company’s new potato precessing plant at Pukeurr, is understood to favour a fair y cautious approach to further development of the industry in New Zealand. The meeting fcas attended by representatives of the Meat Board, poultry industry, the Potato Board, the Meat Research Institute, the Department of Agriculture, the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research the Waitaki Farmers’ Freezing Company, a leading economist and Dr. E. A. M Asselberg, the Inventor of the processing rpethod being used at Oamaru. The purpose of the meeting was to keep those interested informed of devel i>menta in the field and to discuss the possibilities of a processing industry. Dr. Asselberg spoke and reports were given by Mr C. M. Driver, a potato breeder ait the Crop Rese.irch Division of the Department of Scientific and Indus tr. al Research at Lincoln, and by the food technology department at Massey University College of Mamwatu. These were followed by an open forum. A representative of the Meat Board is understood to have indicated that the board would help in exploring potential markets for particularly, processed potato and meat mixtures.
