Rangiora Oak Tree
Sir,—l hope that mine will not be the only voice raised in emphatic protest against the suggested destruction of that fine old oak tree growing at the east end of St. John’s Parish Hall, Rangiora. Can we blame the younger generation for being vandals, when supposedly responsible older people can even contemplate such an act of wanton vandalism? I wonder what it is in the make-up of so many New Zealanders which seems to impel them to cut down trees? Far too many of the wonderful old trees once growing round the township have already been ruthlessly removed. The tree in question must surely be almost as old as Rangiora itself, and why should a few people in a position of brief authority have the right to decree its destruction? Trusting that other tree-lovers will join me in |his effort to have the tree preserved.—Yours, etc., DOROTHY HAVILL. Fernside, May 26, 1963.
