RACING Vamoose Picked In Otago Steeples

Vamoose had enough ability on the flat to run fourth in a New Zealand Cup, and his pace might settle the chance* of his rivals in the Otago Steeplechase at Wingatui today.

Vamoose has won the Grand National Hurdles since he finished flat racing in earnest, and he is one of the most interesting steeplechasing recruits of the year.

The Otago Steeptecfcase will be Vamooee’d first race over country at a totaMaator meeking. but be showed he could jump brush fenced when he won a noo-totaßra-tor event ait Balfour a few weeks ago. Promise Scratched Promise scraped a leg when schooling earlier this week and will not run in the Tahuna Hack and Hunters' Steeplechase today. He looked the likely winner after a close second to The Ranger at Waimate. Now it is anyone’s race. Grant had more speed than most of the South Mand hack hurdlers a season or two back, and he shapes as if ’chasing wdU suit him. He may be the best of an evenlooking field. Sydtrev and Runty may be the pick of the others.

Warfare was scratched yesterday, leaving Palisade to run for the Wilson stable in the Winter Handicap, the, second leg of the TA.B double.

Warfare was also a late withdrawal from the sprint at Waimate last week, but between times she has sprinted well, and it seems she is being kept for later at the meeting. Palisade is good enough, probably, to make the race safe for the stable. The Wanderer, Tutton, and Captain Hunt may be the best of his rivals.

Palisade’s stablemate, Irrepressible, is one of the form runners in the Birthday Handicap, first leg of the TAP. double. Besides, she is bracketed with Kumal, winner of the Canterbury Jockey dub's Sockburn Handicap at hie last start, and one of the best winter handicap performers in the South Island.
