Increase In Prizes For Lottery

(Aters Zealand Pres* Association) WELLINGTON, May 30. The prize money for the Golden Kiwi lottery will be extended from £30,000 to £33,000 and the number of prizes from 1800 to 2010, the Minister of Internal Affairs (Sir Leon Gotz) announced at the drawing this morning of the hundredth lottery.

The new prize list will operate from Lottery 101. although tickets already printed for lotteries 101 to 108 show a prize list of £30.000, prizes will be paid out at the new rates.

The secoiu prize will be increased from £2OOO to £3OOO. the third from £lOOO to £l5OO. fourth from £750 to £lOOO. fifth from £6OO to £750. and sixth from £5OO to £550. The number of £5 prizes will be increased from 1620 to 1830. Sir Leon Gotz said it had never been the intentton of the Government to provide a lottery so attractive as to entice people to buy tickets irrespective of other considerations. At the same time, the lottery would keep money which otherwise might be invested in overseas lotteries, in New Zealand. Sales of tickets in each lottery yielded £62.500. of which £30.000 previously went in prizes. £6250 went to the Government as lottery tax. £6250 went in commission to sellers of tickets, £llOO went to newspapers for publishing results, and about £9OO was for exchange (prizes are free of exchange), postage, administration costs, printing tickets, placards, etc. “From 100 lotteries £3.000.000 has been distributed to 180.000 prize winners many of whom have presumably been enabled to buy homes.” said Sir Leon Gotz. ’The Government has col-

lected £625.000 in lottery tax. and sellers of tickets the same amount in commission Newspapers have been paid more than £lOO.OOO. “Some £770.000 has been paid out to worthy causes, and £440.000 committed for incomplete projects which are dependent on toe people themselves collecting a certain amount of money. The balance of £698.000 is held for future distribution,” he said.
