“We sell more to New Zealand than we buy from her. This cannot continue,” the member of Parliament for Hillsborough (Sheffield), Mr G. Darling, said in the House of Commons.

Speaking in a debate on a motion welcoming the Government’s decision to impose import controls he said that if Britain took any less New Zealand produce its trade in industrial exports to New Zealand would be damaged. “We owe an enormous debt to New Zealand, which kept her food rationing system going for five years after the war to feed us.” Mr Darling said.

The Labour Party would not be a party to any scheme which would weaken Commonwealth ties, he added. The motion was agreed to.
