“STORM IN A TEA-CUP”
Assault Charge Dismissed
A charge of assault brought against a railway employee Lawrence Edward Hogg, by another employee. Edward Htbbe, was dismissed by Mr E. S. J. Crutchley, SM, m the Magistrate's Court, Lyttelton. The dismissal was made under section 42 of the Criminal Justice Act, subject to the defendant paying £2 witnesses’ fees and £5 towards the cost of prosecution. Mr R. de Gcldl. appearing for Hogg, told tlie Court that the affair arose out of a difference in the staff room concerning the filling of a percolator and was only a storm in a tea-cup. Knocked Man Down A 23-year-old seaman. Brian Douglas Harley, pleaded guilty to assaulting Roy Knowles, aged 30. outside a taxi booth at Lyttelton on May 25. Sergeant R. D. Whales told the Court that Harley had believed Knowles passed a remark about his girl-friend and he assaulted Knowles. Harley knocked Knowles down and Knowles had to receive medical attention Convicting Harley and imposing a fine of £5, the Magistrates warned him to be more careful and ordered turn to pay £lO expenses to Knowles. Traffic Offences
On a charge of carrying a pillion passenger incorrectly Seated on a motor-cycle, John Alar. Almond was convicted and ordered to pay costs.
Charged with operating a motor-vehicle wnth no blue light when towing another vehicle. John Charles Richard Wliall was convicted and ordered to pay costs. On a further charge of operating a motor-truck without a red rear light, he was fined £2. Noxious Weeds
The following were fined the amounts stated for failure to clear their properties of noxious weeds: Barry Francis Norris (two charges), £lO and £l5; Clifford Mannings (two charges), £lO and £10: Bra emar Thomas Anderson, £ 10; Thiers Ernest Cornish, convicted only.
Judgment Summons D. P. Sedman was ordered to pay £l5 9s to Springrove Services, Ltd.. Nelson, in default 15 days’ imprisonment.
A man who shoots a cigarette out of his wife's mouth “just for laughs" is guilty of wantonly discharging a firearm.—A Philadelphia magistrate.
