MAORI ARTS AND CRAFTS
Displays At Rotorua
(N.Z. Press Association) ROTOHUA, May 30. Because Rotorua was a great tourist centre it should have more for the visitors by way of displays of Maori arts and crafts, the Minister of Maori Affairs (Mr Hanan) said at Wairakei this morning.
“It is not easy for the average tourist to see Maori practices, but I hope that in the future, with full cooperation from the Maori Affairs Department and the Tourist Department we will be able to increase facilities.” he said.
Mr Hanan spoke of Whaka as a model pa of “great interest to all,” but he said the area should have something more. “With co-operation it may be possible to establish some kind of centre on the grounds soon.” The Minister said he was “very pleased and satisfied" with the advances made in Maori farming in the Taupo area.
“The fact that the Bledisloe Cup—an award for the best Maori farmer in New Zealand—had been won for two years in succession by farms in the TurangiTokaanu area is proof the Maori farmers in this part of New Zealand have initiative," he said.
