AUCKLAND TRAFFIC

Bridge Near “Saturation”

(N.Z. Press Association)

t AUCKLAND, May 30. If major and costly transterbour traffic congestion were to be avoided in Auckland, positive steps toward another crossing must be taken, the chairman' of the Auckland Harbour Bridge Authority (Sir Jahn Altam) said today.

In his annual report to the authority, he said that the volume of traffic over the bridge was that estimated for 1976. The traffic figure for last year was 6,994,757. 9.6 per cent, higher than the previous year. Many years would be needed to build another crossing and if major and costly congestion were to be avoided positive steps must be taken before the present bridge reached saturation.

The general manager (Mr R. L Wilks) said that if the annual rate of increase continued. the bridge would reach this saturation point, ar an average daily flow of 28.000 in 1966-67. "The bridge’s present average daily flow is 19.164 vehicles.” he said.
