Kumai Fit For Saturday “The Press" Special Service DUNEDIN. May 28. Kumai, top weight in the Birthday Handicap, showed his fitness at Wingatui thia morning when he worked well over a mile. Desert Chief, Warfare, Palisade. and Tombob were also impressive. Training operations were delayed because of a sharp frost and a cold wind made conditions most unpleasant The course • proper offered good footing with the trestles 40 feet out. Ridden by the apprentice, 3. F. Carvalho, Kumai galloped a mile in Imin 48sec. the last half mile in 53 3-ssec He was assisted over the last six furlongs by Myfilou (Tree), and Belltana (B. J. Anderton) joined In at the half-mile.

Warfare (j. R. Dowling) and Palisade (R. Pledger) sprinted six furlongs in Imin 21 l-ssec the first three furlongs in 40sec. They were two of the first to gallop and they gave the impression that they could have finished more strongly. Walhola (A. J. Tweedie) ran the distance later in the morning in Imin 21sec after taking 27sec for the first two furlongs Sen (Wilder) was fading but still headed Now or Never (Turnbull), Maria Mia (M. Dowling), GJenmorven (E. J. Didham) and Marona (Landrebe) in Imin 22sec. Sen had her companions strung out when she reeled off the first three furlongs in 37 2-ssec. Desert Chief (Marsh) took Imin 7 2-ssec for five furlongs, the last three furlongs in 40sec. He did it well, and looks a fit challenger for the Birthday Handicap, an event he won last year.

Duplex (Cairns) finished well to shade Reeco (Gye) at the end of five furlongs in Imin 6 2-ssec, the first two furlongs in 25 l-ssec.

Fort Garry (H. T. Anderton) and the novice galloper Soutane (B. J. Anderton) recorded Imin ssec. the first two furlongs in 26sec.

Stormai (J. R. Dowling) and Cluny Bill (M. F Dowling) were together in Imin 7 2-ssec, tbe opening furlong in 13 2-ssec Roby Twilight, a half-brother by Underwood to the treble Wellington Cup winner. Great Sensation, was a length behind Great Howe (Reggett) in Imin Bsec. the first two furlong* in 25se-e.

The best half mile was credited to Dilane (Marsh). Modern Imp (E. J Didham) and Bright Countess (Gittens) in 52 3-ssec, the last three furlongs in 40sec. Ravelston (H. T. Anderton) beat his stablemate Captain Morgan (B. J. Anderton) by a neck in 54 2-ssec. the last three furlongs in 40sec. Corduroy (A. I. Powell) ran the distance in 54sec.

In one erf the few gallops on the plough Tombob (J. Low I worked well over five furlongs in Imin 5 4-ssec. the last three furlongs in 40 2-ssec.
