(New Zealand ■Press Association)

BLENHEIM. May 28 Limping back to Tory Channel with a whale in tow and its engine giving trouble, the steam chaser Orca yesterday afternoon encountered a humpback whale eloee inshore off Cape Campbell. It was the first of this species seen so far this season and it was not long before it had joined the sperm whale in a tow back to the factory. , The ‘illy for the season is now 22 whales—2l sperm and one humpback

Mr G. T Perano. a principal of the whaling party said today that they had taken 20 whales in the first month of operation against sperms. If that could be

maintained they would be satisfied The Orca arrived at the factory at 10 o’clock last night and the humpback was the first to be processed After that all the machinery had to be cleaned before the sperm could be dealt with.

It was explained by Mr Perano that the oil of the sperm whales is used for industrial purposes, whereas the humpback whale oil is edible. Therefore, the oils have to be kept separate. The Orca moved to Picton for repairs today. It is expected she will be reedy to sail into the strait again tomorrow.

In the meantime the lookout at the entrance to Tory Channel is being manned in case any more humpbacks pass through the strait.
