To Reign Outstays Hurdles Field

“TM Pr***“ 6p*rta*

AUCKLAND, May 12.

To ReiOD’B easy defeat of some very hiahlv-regartled opponents and the collapse of the each-way favourite Peacemaker made a memorable Waikato Hurdles at le Kapa vesterdav. To Reign ran a brilliant last halfmile to win by three lengths. Peacemaker, on the other hand, had half the course to go when he seemed completely spent.

In the finish Peacemaker tailed the 14 runner*. A visitor from Woodville, he was the each-way favourite with nearly £4OOO bet on hi* chance. To Reign, one of the local candidate*, wa* the next best backed and he paid £5 8s for a win and £1 19* tor a place. The closest behind To Reign at the post was Blue Rock, a stablemate of Peacemaker. and Pin Money came third. Both were running at good odd*. Blue Rock being the 7-8 favourite and Pin Money. 10-9.

A good-looking five-year-old gelding by Targui from Swift Falcon, To Reign is raced by his trainer, W. C. Winder, and Mr C. J. Winder on a leaae from Mrs R R. Knox.

At two. three and four years To Reign was raced by Mrs Knox without doing anything of much account. As a five-year-old he won £930 for the Winders and his earnings this season have now reached £2550. To Reign was a winner twice over hurdles at the Waikato spring meeting last November. In between times at a dozen attempts he raced well for a handful of minor placings. Yesterday To Reign dashed clear in front with about five furlongs to go and was not afterward headed. His rider, R J. Turnwald. steadied him a bit coming to the last jump. Once over he urged him again and To Reign put a further break on Blue Rock and Pin Money, which for a few strides had run him fairly close. The complete failure of Peacemaker following his high-weight win the week before was unaccountable. For seven furlongs Peacemaker ran close to the leaders Lord Oman and Splice At the very next fence with a round to go he was in

diAcultie* and a little further on he lost heart altogether. GOOD TIME To Reign went the two miles and eight flight in 3 min 35 3-s*ec, which is good going although a full three seconds outside the time put up by Calm Ruler, the quickest Waikato Hurdles winner of recent year* Peacemaker and Lord Oman led the rush to the first jump in the Waikato Hurdles by a length from Splice. After the firat two flights Lord Oman and Splice were going at a strong pace, clear in the lead. Peacemaker ran third just about as far in front of Joy Boy, To Reign and Pin Mones. Blue Rock waa' las:. Lord Oman and Splice disputed the pace-making five lengths ahead of Peacemaker passing the stands At the next jump Peacemaker hesitated badly and lost ground When they had covered another two furlongs Peacemaker was spent and Splice did not last much longer Near the six furlongs To Reign joined Lord Oman Crossing the top he dashed away on his own. With half a mile to run and one fence to take To Reign led by three lengths from Oman, which was three lengths clear of Count Un. Cretan and Blue Rock, racing in close order. Ptn Money came sixth a couple of lengths behind the bunch. The others fell away, outpaced. To Reign kept gelloping freely once in the run home. Coming to the las', jump he led Pin Money. Blue Rock and Count Lin and he landed just in front. On the flat again To Reign was too good altogether and he ran to the post three lengths ahead of Blue Rock, which beat Pin Money by two lengths for second. Count Lin (fourth), was three length* awaj’ and five lengths ahead of Lord Oman Two lengths back was Cretan. There was about the same distance to Kenloch and another short gap to Joy Boy and Daysun. Elrey, Splice. Tawhiti Rahi and Johnny Dee were in a bunch next and Peacemaker ran last. Results:— MELVILLE STEEPLECHASE, £600; about 2> a m.—s/6 TRIPLE COUNT (4) K. A. Couples who want to cuddle and kiss on the street are free to do so-without interference from the police. If an embrace seems to be getting too passionate, officers must first warn the couple to “move on” before taking any more drastic artion London police instructions.
