RENOVATED CINEMA
New Decor Of Carlton
Twelve weeks’ reconstruction and interior decoration in the new Carlton cinema were completed yesterday. Last evening, at the gala opening, the public had its first opportunity to appraise the new decor.
Simple, uncluttered lines and restful, subdued shades combine to give a relaxed atmosphere: yet splashes of colour provided by contemporary furniture in the lounge, and such features as the dramatic, black and white chess-board effect of the auditorium ceiling and the exposed-beam ceilings of the lounge and lower auditorium add highlights to the interior.
The foyer has been enlarged by Incorporating an adjoining shop. The main wall of the foyer is naturalfinish, timber panelling; the two end walls are covered by contemporary, screen-printed wallpaper with cigar brown and charcoal patterns. Both this wallpaper and the sage green carpet with an overlining of a brown, cellular pattern, were made in Christchurch.
A striped effect has been achieved for the walls of the auditorium, with vertical bands of russet, and capuccino colours. Most striking, however, is the ceiling. It has light-weight white panels attached to a steel frame in a chess-board pattern. It not only camouflages the old, ornately moulded roof of the former Crystal Palace cinema, but by decreasing the height of the auditorium it improves its proportions. Mr M, Moodabe, jun., son of the governing director of Amalgamated Theatres (Mr M. J. Moodabe). was among those who attended the opening performance.
Youth Trophy,— Miss Barbara Marshall, aged 18, of 24 Morere street. Titahi Bay, has won the National Association of Youth Clubs of New Zealand "Youth of The Year’’ trophy—*P A.)
