N.Z.-Bred Red Factor Canaries On Display

Attetnpte to produce red factor canaries in New Zealand are well on the way to success if the quality of the colour of the 22 reds entered lin the Christchurch Canary ; and Cage Bird Club's annual show are truly representative iof the home-bred birds, i according to Mr J. H. D. Miller, the judge of the foreign bird section of the show. The show opened yesterday in the ! Durham Street Art Gallery. I Mr Miller was pleased with the quality of all birds in this section and especially with the reds. “These birds 'are rapidly approaching the correct colour of the overseas bred reds,” he said. The winning bird shown by H. Moran, of Christchurch,

was a very good type, beautifully and evenly coloured throughout, said Mr Miller. Two other birds both with colours which are rarely seen were entered in the show, in the British birds section. The judge, Mr C. W. Clemen, said that these birds were outstanding of their types. “It’s not ciften that a vivid red mule or an inky black mule |is bred and it is only occasionally that they would be entered in the same show. Judges of other canary sections and the budgerigars were pleased with the standard of the birds. Although it was still early in the year, it was considered that several birds were outstanding and could be expected to win further prizes at future shows. A total of 1120 birds from all over the country was entered in the show. This was 14 more than last year. However, birds actually on show numbered 1010, an increase of more than 100. Once again I the largest section was the budgerigar which had a record entry of 560 birds. The Yorkshire canaries were second with 103 birds on show. The three-day show closes tomorrow evening.
