ALDRIN AND DIELDRIN
Lands Dept. To Use Stocks
A outlet has been found for quantities of dieldrin and aldrin held by the Department of Agriculture since these insecticides were taken from farmers and commercial interests after their use as dipping materials was prohibited.
The Minister of Agriculture .(Mr Taiboys) said in Christchurch last evening that the insecticides would be used by the Lands and Survey Department on development blocks throughout the country. The materials, which were held at offices of the department throughout the country in various forms, would have to be reformulated by the Lands Department to meet its requirements and they would be applied to fallowed land only against insect pests like grassgrubs. They would be applied under strict control so that they would not get into rivers and streams. Mr Taiboys said that they would take the place of insecticides that the Lands Department would be purchasing in any case for this purpose. It had been ascertained that plants subsequently grown on ground treated in this way would not take up these insecticides.
