Displaying Sculpture

Sir,—Justice' can be dispensed with equal impartiality on the ground floor, the fourth floor, or, to quote an admirer of Sir Francis Adams on the latter’s retirement, “up a tree.” The exhibiting of Large pieces of sculpture is, however, noit so flexible. They are ground-floor material only. For many years the Canterbury Society of Arts has been host to such exhibitions as the Henry Moore show, since the city’s gallery lacks a large exhibition hall for sculpture. The exhibition of contemeporary British sculpture here last year was, through no fault of its organisers, far from ideal in its presentation. It is to be hoped that the society will plan to continue its policy of augmenting the inadequate resources available here for mounting major exhibitions. —Yours, etc., W. A. SUTTON. May 8, 1963.
