B.H.S. HALL
Planning For Extensions
Plans to extend the school assembly hall are to be made by the board of governors of Christchurch Boys’ High School. The board yesterday delegated its works committee to examine the hall and the grounds available and prepare an application for a grant. The headmaster, Mr C. F. S. Caldwell, told the board that, the school roll had been over 1000 for some time and the hall was inadequate for a full school assembly.
“Some 200 or 300 boys have to be excluded from morning assembly each day, and if a full assembly is necessary more than half the space is taken up by people standing.” he said.
The present stage was also inadequate for any musical or dramatic production, as it was fully built in. and had no useful space behind or below it.
In building new school wings, provision had been made for the hall to extend, and this addition, possibly with a gallery at the back of the hall, would be most valuable, he said. Mr R, K. Milne said that the Education Department’s policy was usually not to approve additions to school halls until all schools wanting them had been satisfied. However, a telling point in the school’s favour was that a great part of the cost of the hall had been raised by pupils and friends of the school, as well as from donations.
