“Disappointing” In First Quarter
A survey of Christchurch business conditions for the first three months of 1963 was disappointing, said the secretatry of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association (Mr R T. Alston) The survey of 92 firms was made by the association.
Mr Alston said that business conditions in Christchurch, compared with North Island centres, should be more buoyant, Christchurch conditions had. however. improved slightly compared with the final quarter of last year. Mr Alston said the survey showed that both sales and forward orders increased by about 3 per cent., and also there was an improvement in stocks of finished goods. There was a further drop on the figure a yeat earlier of the number of people engaged in industry Overtime, however, had decreased less titan in the previous quarter. 22 per cent., compared with 37 per cent.
Things looked happier in 'the apparel group, where sales api eared to be improving. Mr Alston said Staff and overtime in this industry were still down Mr Alston said that the building materials industrj was still down 73 per cent on sales and 8.5 per cent, on overtime worked.
