ANAKIWA COURSE “VALUABLE”
Youths Agree On Training
Participation in an Out- * and Bound course at Anak.wa is not a holiday by any stretch of the imagination, according to three youths who attended the first, third, and fifth courses at the school and briefly addressed members of the Canterbury branch of the movement at the annual, meeting. The three young men. Messrs B. Pocking, B. Carter, and C. Brittenden. also agreed that facilities and training methods were entirely different from what they had expected. Each considered the time spent there had been benefic.al, physically and mentally The training was valuable experience which would always be useful.
After each youth had given his impressions, the retiring cnairman of the Canterbury branch (Mr H. R. Hornsby) spoke about the development of the school. He said that although there had been h jgtility in some quarters to the scheme in the formative stages this was often a normal occurrence with any new endeavour. The project had been a big undertaking, and in getting it launched several mistakes had been made. But progress was now being made, and the school was established.
The incoming committee decided to ask Mr Justice Macarthur to become president of the Canterbury branch.
Tribute to Mr Hornsby for his contribution to the Outward Bound movement, not only in Canterbury but throughout New Zealand, was paid by Mr A. I. Cottrell.
Officers elected were:— Chairman, Mr A. I. Cottrell; secretary, Mr C. R. Harman: treasurer, Mr G. Flower. A committee of eight with power to co-opt others was also elected.
