F.O.L. Wants Lottery Funds For Hospitals

WELLINGTON, May 2.

AU profits from New Zealand lotteries should be paid towards hospital funds instead of selected charities, etc., as at present, the annual conference of the Federation of Labour decided today. The conference will recommend to the Joint Council of Labour, which comprises F.O.L. and Labour Party representatives, that it take appropriate action in support of the lottery funds decision. Other remits passed included:

That over-payments of income tax be the subject of automatic rebates. That medical benefits, dental and optical services be completely free under social security. That the practicability be investigated of a State-owned drug manufacturing and distributing company to make use of, for example, coal byproducts and so lessen the

drug companies’ "grab’’ from the Social Security Fund. That the Government be asked to implement true free education for all State primary and secondary school children. That the Government be asked to amend taxation legislation to provide that travelling expenses to and from work or employment be eligible for tax reduction. That the Joint Council of Labour be asked to support legislation to provide for compensation payments by employers to workers laid off through automation or redundancy.

That the F.O.L. press for three Weeks’ annual leave for all wage and salary earners. That, unions be directed to claim in awards for one week’s sickness pay in each year of service with the same employer. That Waitangi Day and January 2 should be made public holidays.
