The opening of the duckshooting season .this weekend signals the approach of winter. For the grocery trade it is a reminder that stocks of soups, canned and frozen vegetables and winter lines need to be checked over and replacements ordered where

necessary to fill gaps in stocks. Ground Nuts.— Earlier it was advised that the South African peanut crop was a poor one. supplies would probably be limited and no prices were given. However, new season's prices have now been quoted and are unchanged on last season. Shipments are expected at Lyttelton in early August. New Lines. — During the last few weeks J. Wattie Canneries. Ltd., has been developing quite a large number of new lines in different sizes. These include chocolate cream rice, in Uoz, cans, 220 z sliced beetroot. a new: variety of green beans in Boz and 30oz sizes of creamed corn and ox-tail soup. A smaU aUocation of broad beans is expected to be available shortly. Cheese Prices. — Generally at this time of the year mild cheese prices increase by Id per lb. This rise has now been announced by cheese factories and the new price operated from May 1. Zucchini.—This is a new line recently developed by J. Wattie Canneries, Ltd. So far only small quantities have been produced and these are for testing the market. Zfltechini is an Italian dish thJt can be served as a hot vegetable or used in addition to soups and stews. A suggested retail price is 2s 3d per 16oz can. . The ne\v line can be expected oh the market in the near future. Fruit Prices.—According to advice received from S. Kirkpatrick add Company, Ltd., a range of its canned fruits has advanced in price. Among these are peaches and apricots. This brings 30oz cans of peaches into line with other canners’ prices. However, “K” peaches’ will not be distributed in Christchurch and only a small quantity of apricots is expected here.
