State House Rents

Sir, —The Minister of Housing claims that when he increased the rents of State houses in 1961 provision was made to exempt pensioners. This statement of the Minister is not entirely correct, as I know a number of people on the pension, with no income from any other source,

who have to pay the new! rents set by these increases.! I know’ of one man who went! on the pension last year who is nursing a desperately sick wife, and he was refused exemption from the increased rent This man has to battle along and pay the new high rent set by the National Government.—Yours, etc.. NOT HONEST POLITICS. April 29. 1963. (The Minister of Housing (Mr Rae) said: “The exemption of pensioners from the rent increase applied only to those who were on benefits at October 1, 1961. There is no provision for a reduction of rent where tenants become pensioners after that date. The case mentioned by the correspondent of a man who went on pension in 1962 is correct. He does not qualify for exemption. This follows exactly the policy of the Labour Government when rents were increased in 1958. Such tenants have the right to apply to the Social Security Department for a rent supplement where the circumstances justify it."]
