LIGHTS FOR FUNERALS
Support In Christchurch
Funeral directors in Christchurch last evening said they were in full agreement with a move by Auckland directors to encourage drivers of cars in corteges to switch on their headlights to avoid interference by other vehicles and to facilitate traffic flow. The Auckland move is supported by the City Council traffic department, which believes that lights burning on all cars in funeral processions would be certain to bring a higher degree of courtesy from other motorists, according to the Press Association.
Mr R. A. Knight, president of the Auckland and Provincial Funeral Directors' Association, said it was not uncommon for corteges to became fragmented through trucks breaking in without the drivers realising the position.
A Christchurch funcaal director said the City Council should pass a by-law making it compulsory for drivers to have their headlights on in the dip position.
Another said he bad asked ministers to announce at the end of services that cars in the cortege should have thejr lights on.
