VISIT TO LONDON

Mr Manning Accepts

The Mayor of Christchurch (Mr G. Manning) will leave late in July for Britain. He has accepted an invitation by the Lord Mayor of London (Sir Ralph Perring) for himself and the Mayoress to visit London, along with the mayors of New Zealand’s thrde other main cities and the mayors of eight Australian cities, between October 8 and October 11.

Mr Manning was granted leave by the City Council on Wednesday evening, when he said he had made tentative arrangements to travel to and from Britain by sea, and expected to return by the end of November.

“It will be the greatest honour of my life to represent the city of Christchurch in the Guildhall, the home of self-government,” said the Mayor.

Assuring Mr Manning that the councillors and citizens thought he should make the trip, the Deputy-Mayor (Cr. H. P. Smith) proposed that the finance committee should consider an allowance towards the Mayor’s travelling expenses.
